Teenagers: Computer & Internet Usage

Packaged Facts 2005 reported that computer usage increase with age; older siblings tend to use the computer more then their younger brothers or sisters. Most teens between 8-11 years of age will visit entertainment related web sites such as Nick.com, Disneychannel.com, Cartoonnetwork.com, and search engines such as Yahoo and Google.

In addition, 12-14 year old girls will equally use computers for their homework and activities such as games while boys will choose to use the computer for games as opposed to homework activities. In general, girls 12-14 years of age are more likely to use the internet for homework, research and learning. Girls aged 8-14 use the internet more than boys. These teens exhibit heavy internet usage between the ages of 8-11 and 12-14 (Packaged Facts, 2005).

As children get older, their percentage of online spending increases. An estimated 34.6% of children between the ages of 12-14 years use the internet to find information about a product according to the National Center for Education Statistics, dated October 2003.

Approximately 21 million U.S. teen ages 12-17 currently use the internet. Pew Internet & American Life Project's survey reported that half of all US teenagers and 57% of all teens who use the internet are considered content creators since they have participated in blog and webpage creation, fabricated original works, uploaded photographs and videos, told their stories online and so forth. ?33% of teenagers have artwork, stories, videos and other creative content that they share with others online while 19% of teens reported that they remix existing content to create their own creations. 51% of teens stated that they download music while their adult counterparts report 18%. 32% reported to create blogs or webpages for others and for school projects and 22% stated to have a personal webpage. In addition, 19% of teens stated that they have their own blog while 38% of teenagers read others blogs.? In addition, these youngsters, lead by older teen girls, are more passionate about blogs then adults (Media Post Communications, Research Brief December 2005).
